Common uses of lemongrass essential oil

  • Aromatherapy: Add 3–6 drops to a diffuser to purify the air, create an uplifting atmosphere, or calm your nerves.

  • Massage oil: Dilute 15–20 drops of lemongrass oil in ¼ cup of a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil. Massage it into your skin to moisturize or rub it into muscles to relieve tension.

  • Skin and hair products: Add a few drops to your shampoo, conditioner, or moisturizer to tone the skin, control oil, and combat dandruff. Always dilute properly before applying topically.

  • DIY cleaning spray: For a natural disinfectant, combine 15–20 drops of lemongrass oil with equal parts white vinegar and distilled water in a spray bottle.

  • Natural bug spray: Create a natural insect repellent by mixing 15–20 drops of lemongrass essential oil with water and witch hazel in a spray bottle.

Safety precautions

  • Dilute for topical use: Lemongrass oil is highly concentrated and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions if applied undiluted. A safe dilution is typically 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil.

  • Perform a patch test: Before applying it more widely, test the diluted oil on a small patch of skin on your inner arm and wait 24–48 hours to check for any adverse reactions.

  • Do not ingest: Essential oils should not be consumed unless under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional.

  • Exercise caution around pets: Lemongrass oil can be toxic to some animals, especially cats.

  • Consult a doctor: Pregnant or nursing individuals and those with medical conditions should consult a healthcare provider before use.
